Lets Talk: the wrapping debate

To wrap or not to wrap,
that is the question.

Image via BHG.com

There has been a long running debate at my house and this debate all revolves around wrapping gifts under the Christmas tree.

One of us grew up with all the gifts from Santa unwrapped and placed in glorious piles...

The other grew up with a Santa that wrapped every present perfectly even down to the last candy bar in the stocking...

So I want to know, how does Santa work at your house?
Is he pro or anti wrapping?

As for mine and Nate's debate that happens every year?
No worries. It's nothing a little marriage counseling can't handle.

At our house Santa's presents are not wrapped. In our minds as children we imagined Santa having a big bag of toys that he had made and he would come to our house and pull them out of his bag. So they were not wrapped. The toys under the tree were from mom and dad and they were wrapped. Christmas is fun either way though. Good luck choosing!

Unwrapped!
When the kids wake up and run to the tree, it looks like a toy store was set up in their very own home!!!

ummmm . . . Santa's gifts are always unwrapped. The wrapped ones are from mom, dad, bro. sis . . . it really is just that simple- don't wrap. saves you time, money, and the kids love it when they walk in that room and see their special spot.

Hah! We had this EXACT issue!

We've compromised. Presents from Mom and Dad are wrapped. Santa's gifts are displayed. It's funny how ridiculously stupid our spouse's traditions are compared to our own!

Ours were always unwrapped as kids, displayed perfectly for 4 o'clock am viewing! We wrap some of ours now though because unwrapping is SO MUCH FUN!!!
A little bit of both makes everyone happy.. no?

wow, I didn't realize David and I actually had something in common, we of course had all our gifts wrapped. Santa has his own unique santa paper of course - don't want the kiddos confused with Santa and Mom and Dad using the same paper :)

Come on is it even a questions I'm sitting here thinking do people really not wrap their presents? I guess from your comments I had no idea that Christmas was done like that. Crazy... thats all I can say. Isn't christmas about unwrapping your presents. Thats the fun of it right? I mean the worldly fun of it!

Mitch and I have a debate every year, we also debate if the presents should be wraped and put under the tree before Christmas or wrap them all after kids go to bed Christmas night.
Mitchs house has santa gifts wraped, and we didn't. So we compromised on we have the stocking stuffers put in and beside their stockings and then we wrap 2 presents under the tree from Santa. It works and we are both happy. I think "Christmas" should be under "what to know when getting married" list....Good luck!

Unwrapped from Santa for sure! Wrapped from Mom & Dad.

So did you grow up with everything wrapped or unwrapped?!

Ginnie said...

Jana, I totolly agree that should have been on the good-things-to-know-before-you-get-married list.

So I'm the wrapper in my family. I can't help it. I love everything wrapped.

My question for all you non-wrappers is this; How many presents does santa bring? If he only brings one then I can see the non-wrapping idea, but Christmas would be over the minute you walk out and see your presents if all of them were unwrapped, no?

when we were kids the main gift from Santa was always unwrapped, but then there we always a couple other smaller ones from him that were wrapped.
I tend to do that now, and leave the big gift unwrapped, and wrap everything else.

I am with Merilee. We always leave the big Santa gift unwrapped. I will wrap all the others though. I even will wrap a couple of the little things in the stockings, like a movie and whatever else is easy to wrap.

I am coming to Utah this weekend. I think we will be at my parents for the week of christmas, so we should try to get together. We need to get all the girls together for dinner.

Unwrapped and unboxed. Santa takes toys out of their packaging so that mom and dad don't have to frantically untwist a bazillion twisties or set up something that takes hours. The children are instantly able to see what Santa left and enjoy them without tears or whines....

Santa never puts a number on the items- Usually one large gift a few other simple ones and a stocking. All age dependent and $$.

Wrapped gifts are from everyone else.

Honestly, Santa can keep that one particular wrapping paper hidden, has time to wrap and doesn't have a major back ache when done?

PS. The picture of your tree is beautiful. You've really outdone yourself this year.......

PPS, when are we getting together?

you mean all these years, i didn't have to stay up till 2:00am wrapping wrapping, wrapping wrapping for 6 little darlings who had been good all year?

if you're just starting family traditons and plan to have more than 3 children- i would suggest
- not wrap -

I agree with Krystal. It's just weird NOT to wrap presents. I remember first hearing about this in school. Picture this..........Kaleb runs out to see a game and gets so excited but then it's really not for him. It's Abries. It's just confusing. Wrap them.....wrap them all!

They were always unwrapped. But Santa would leave a note on the present letting us know if it was for my brother, myself, or both of us.

I love the fact that they're unwrapped because then we would fuss over Santa's gifts first and squeal but then have much more fun opening the ones from my parents.

It's up to you but I would say leave them unwrapped! In all the kids Christmas movies Santa never wrapped anything!

I am a lurker and love your photos. I just had to comment on this post.

I had NO idea people didn't wrap gifts. I go a little overboard and wrap each of my kids presents from santa in different Christmas paper - I remember learning the truth about Santa when I could recognize handwriting and my mom wrote out gift tags! So I skip the gift tags - my son has "Cars" Christmas paper, my baby has Winnie the Pooh and mom and dad have snowflakes.

But wrap - that was the fun part. Anticipating what was in each package.... I do agree - big presents go unwrapped from Santa but in our house, that is only 1 :)

Thanks! love your blog and pictures! You are so funny and I really enjoy reading... Merry Christmas

UNWRAPPED!

Santa brings lots, most are unwrapped. I do, however, wrap a couple of things for each kiddo and I always wrap whatever goes in the stocking, aside from candy. All family gifts are wrapped under the tree.
Our Christmas schedule goes as follows:

Kids wait at the top of the stairs until dad gives the o.k. They race to see their things, so fun. I love having it all set up and out, the kids are just stunned. We drag this part out forever and don't open the presents under the tree until after brunch. I make it last until the afternoon :)

I had never heard of not wrapping presents until my sister-in-law said her family doesn't. They just come out Christmas morning and all the presents are there under the tree. I can't even imagine! I sometimes don't wrap the Santa gift (because it's a strange shape or too big) but everything else for sure...and it sits under the tree as soon as I can get them wrapped!

UNWRAPPED!!! We place our gifts to each other wrapped and under the tree and we place them under the tree early December and oo and ah over them for weeks. Santa then places his UNWRAPPED gifts to us in neat piles either on the couch/chairs or the floor. He wraps a few of the gifts and a few in the stocking but the majority are unwrapped!!

oh and I just found your comment about how much Santa brings...well honestly Santa brings quite a bit, probably too much, for each child. The children look for their stocking and then they know which pile is theirs. I grew up this way and it has carried over, my husband even conformed when we got married.

no no no! santa does not have time to wrap every single person on the earths presents! santa gifts unwrapped , everything else is wrapped. we had the same debate here!

Maybe you cold meet somewhere in the middle and wrap a few of the bigger items in the pile! I usually don't wrap probably cause I am to lazy!

I had NO idea that so many people DIDN'T wrap gifts!! I must ask all potential boyfriends if they wrap or not I guess. I am an advocate of wrapping. As a kid I always wondered why all the gifts were wrapped in the same paper that we had though...this was easily solved by my mom saying that santa didn't have enough paper to wrap them all so she would leave our paper out for the elves to do the wrapping when they got to our house - makes perfect sense right?

I am part of the wrapped people. If something was bigger like the year I got the barbie dream house that was unwrapped but the rest was always wrapped, that was always part of the fun. I guess it also depends on how many pesents kids are getting. In talking with friends the ones that don't wrap buy their kids tons of gifts, the ones that do wrap keep it smaller without as many presents..

In our house, Santa does not wrap. Each child has a specified spot...they know what they asked for and can easily spy their spot. This year my daughter doodled names for each child and left them in different areas to make it easier for Santa. The kids are excited in the morning to see their toys displayed in their own little spot. Gifts from mom, dad and siblings are always wrapped.
