And So it Begins

The first day of Kindergarten was officially today.
I'm having to wake up earlier than I want to, to get Abrie ready for school.
She asked me last night if she could just sleep in her school clothes.
I seriously considered it.
I'll take all the extra sleep I can get.
Isn't 8:00 am too early to start school?

So we were up and at 'em and out the door by 7:45 with enough time to spare to take some first-day-of-school pictures.
Abrie's response: Mom do I have to?
My response: Yes. Now turn and show me your back pack, then flip your hair and give me that sassy smile. Make your mother proud.

Our little photo shoot was quickly interrupted...

That's buck naked Macie streaking across the front yard. I think my kids have Mommy radar. Every time I'm about to step out the door it goes off and they come running crying behind me screaming, "Don't go, Mommy, pleeeaaase don't go!". They say it as if their very life depends on me staying. It's nice to be so wanted, except sometimes it would be nice not to be.

And where there is one crying there will soon be two...

So I walk Abrie to school and we stand in line with all the other anxious kindergarteners and their parents with cameras, camcorders, and tissues in tote. As I'm standing there in line I start noticing all of the cute little gingerbread men that the children had brought back to school as their first day assignment. The assignment was to decorate your own gingerbread man how ever you want, then bring it back for it to displayed for everyone to see.

Abrie was so excited about her little masterpiece, but was a little worried about her "funny looking" triangle nose. I reassured her that it was the best and cutest little gingerbread girl I had ever seen.

I especially loved her little flip-flops she drew.

I start getting a closer look at all the little gingerbread men and I about died. I kid you not. I have never seen more talented Kindergarteners in my whole life. Wow, these little gingerbread men were stylin'. The whole time I kept laughing to myself and saying, YGTBKM (my niece tells me that stands for you've got to be kidding me... you know, text talk. I have no idea what I'm talking about right now)

Check out these works of art....

(The eyes of the gingerbread men have been blacked out, as to protect the identity of the innocent)

Ok, this one wins the award for scrappin up and stampin up cuteness. Her little outfit comes complete with matching headband and coordinating flip-flops. And to make even better, it's diamond embroidered. I must have embarrassed her, she's blushing a bit.

No little gingerbread boy is complete without a stylish faux hawk and button up shirt.

Bright, fresh and colorful. So cute you could just eat her.

So as the kids walked into their classroom with their little gingerbread men in hand it was almost as if someone said, "Parents commence crying". In sync, all of the mothers pulled out their tissues and started to cry, but not me. I was a rock... at least outwardly.

Inside I was full of mixed emotions. I'm not so much sad that my little girl is starting the beginning of an eternity of school. I'm mostly sad that I can't be there to protect her and constantly be there to give her reassurance that everything will be OK and to tell her, "Honey, I like your gingerbread man just the way it is; flip-flops, triangle nose and all.

Those other parents are lame for decorating their kids gingerbread man. Abrie's is the best! I can't believe she is going to the school you went to! Weird. She looked so cute! School doesn't start here until 9, but I am sure I will be in Utah by the time Margo goes to school ( at least I hope so! )

Has Wendy done your photos yet? I check every once in awhile on her official website. I figured it would be under your name, but you never know.

Ok... I'll openly admit that I am a "blog stalker"! :0) Not sure exactly how I stumbled upon your blog... but I enjoy checking it out! I have to comment on the Gingerbread man. I think that you daughter's was the best out of the four shown. I was a teacher before my new job of Domestic Engineer and I always had parents "help" their kids... it drove me crazy. Think about the message that they are sending their children and at such a young age. Hope Abrie's day was a success!
BTW.. curious.. how do you draw on your pictures? LOVE it!

Is that faux hawk made of spaghetti noodles?

My poor kids will probably never have a cool-looking ginger bread person like some you displayed. I'm so creatively challenged. Abrie looks so cute! I love the first picture. You take such good shots! So did it bring back memories to be at the school or what? i bet that's kinda fun

Oh, what a big girl! She is going to love it. I'm sure Kaleb is going to miss her tons. What are your plans? How long to plan to be at your parents? That is quite a commute for Nate. Call Me!

Wow, I'm TERRIFIED of sending my kids to school. Good job on letting her go the first day.

Ohhh growing up -so bittersweet.

As for the parents "helping" decorate the gingerbread people, just wait till science fair project time. You just KNOW the kid didn't produce that masterpiece of scientific wonderfulness complete with photoshopped diagrams and visual aids.

Uhh, they grow up so fast. I had to stop and leave a comment, you brought back happy/tearful memories, now you are officially part of the "club." The "I've had to send my kids off to strangers and I'm ready to freak, but my kid is much stronger/well prepared than I thought" CLUB - now give yourself a pat on the back, because you get to take credit for the majority of the preparation that went into making her a successful Kindergardener!!

That's crazy. In school yesterday my professor had us decorate gingerbread men. I took mine to work and made my associates decorate it with product from the store. You should see what the plumbing department did with their gingerbread man, hilarious!!

Abrie gets the prize for doing it all by herself! I mean come on people, who are you trying to impress, seriously, it's a gingerbread man! Abrie is so cute! I am jealous that her school is close enough that you can walk her! also, that her school starts at 8:00, Austin starts at 7:35 isn't that a little early???

Yah, those trendy little gingerbread men (and women) bug me. I like Abrie's! Way to go on surviving the first day of school. I am scared for that day to come, for the same reasons you mentioned.

We LOVE her gingerbread man! I called you several times today to see how her first day was. Way to be a ROCK I got in the car on Ethan's first day and cried. Same feelings of not being about to be there to protect, reassure and love.

Nicole goes in the afternoon and I love it. We did the same thing with gingerbreads. Pretty funny! Although I didn't take a picture.

You are the BEST mom for letting her be creative all on her own. It is amazing to see the kids develope their own talents and skills if you let them. Connor spelt his name RONNOC today, and I said, "Is that backwards honey?" He looked and said, "No!" Hmmm...after a year of spelling it the right way, he is experimenting, but I just let him, and he will discover most of it on his own....that's the key DISCOVERING, not merely imitating!

What a good mom you are for letting her do it all by herself. That is exactly what I would have done too!! Let the kids do it themselves! We have already been through kindergarden right??

It looks like Hannah will start at 8 am too!! But we don't start until the last monday in august! It will be strange having them home before 11 am and done with their school day!!

Tell Abrie we love her gingerbread girl. Congrats Ginnie John for not keepin up with the "Jones' of Utah". Here's to KEEPIN IT REAL! PLAY ON PLAYAS! Hahaha...what? Don't ask, it's late here, oh and I am watching Project Runway. Everyone on that show is a little different in their own little way.

Holy cow. who are these kids?!!! And so it begins right? I can't believe she's already in school. I forgot about year round. I bet she's loving it though. And you can from your pics that there was a little parental help perhaps! Seriously.

wow year round school huh. i think they should do that more places. I love her little gingerbread person that she clearly made herself unlike the others who parents did them...

I couldn't stop chuckling about this all day. Tell Abrie we loved her ginger bread girl too and really those other moms are probably the ones feeling sort of dumb. Cause really did they want a reward. But as I was reading it, I was thinking I would have been the mom to have forgotten to have Aria do the project all together. Aria is pretty nervous about starting K. She asks me every minute what they will have her do. Maybe I will have her call Abrie to tell her it will be okay.

YOU NEED TO GET PAID TO DO THIS!!!!
SERIOUS.

Ah, you bring back memories...don't let them see you cry! I can't beleive Nathan and Abrie are both starting Kindergarten, Abrie seems twice Nathan's age. You make me reconsider holding him back a year. Seeing as school starts in 1 1/2 weeks, I better make up my mind about that one!
