Before I explain, let me describe how the day went when I got them on.
- Woke up, looked in the mirror and kissed my brace-free mouth good bye.
- Got to the Orthodontist office (Nate came with me), wanted to cry, but held strong.
- Laid in the chair, felt the lower brackets with my tongue, almost started to cry.
- Lady walks in, mistakes me for her teenage child, on the verge of crying.
- Finally got my braces on, the assistance all came over, assured me that I looked 'super cute', despite their efforts... I still wanted to cry.
- Walk out, Nate holds my hand, tells me I look pretty, catch a glimpse of my new shiny grill in the reflection of the car window, and I totally loose it.
Have you ever had a really bad hair cut? I mean REALLY bad. I have. I was in 9th grade. I said cut it short and cut it short she did, so short that my brothers decided that Jimmy would be a more appropriate name for me... Jimmy, the little brother they never had.
I came home from that hair cut, looked in the mirror and cried like a little baby. The thought of wearing a paper bag over my head was looking like a viable option. Surely, the paper bag was the lesser of the two evils.
Well, when I saw my reflection that day in the mirror, that was exactly how I felt- except this was a 'bad hair cut' that was going to last for 1.5 years. So not cool. It was so not even cooler, being the braces novice wearer that I am, when I attempted to take a bite of a McDonald's Chicken sandwich and got bread 'all stuck up in my grill'. I cried then too. Nate still tried to convince me how beautiful I am even with half of a chicken sandwich stuck in my teeth. Now that's true love.
I got over myself a couple hours later when I came home and my kids decided they would still accept me as their Mom. They said I didn't look any different and I take their word on it since they're usually pretty good at telling me when I look bad, or when my breath smells...which is, of course, never. Gotta love the honesty of kids... sometimes.
So, your question: Why did I decided to get braces?
My Answer:
- Because my parents didn't love me as a child and never had me get braces.
- Because I wanted to bring sexy back. Like junior high sexy.
- Because Nate assured me he is well experienced in the ways of kissing girls with braces.
- Because I needed to make sure Nate was really as good as he claimed to be.
- Because I needed a new way to relate to my younger nieces and nephews.
- Because I wanted to give people the opportunity to practice their one liner braces jokes.
- Because adult orthodontia is the "in" thing.
- Because talking with a lisp is thuper thexy.
- Because I wanted to color coordinate my little bands with each holiday. You know, Halloween- alternating black and orange, Christmas- red and green, Groundhogs day- brown & light brown (in honor of Punxsutawney Phil). Really, the options are endless.
- Because I was running low on topics to discuss on my blog.
- Because I figured 1.5 years is really not too long to go without smiling or talking.
There you have it! You may all have peace of mind now.
Oh, and a picture of me and my braces...

This is about as close as you're going to get. I would have to get a ridiculous amount of comments to get the nerve to post a picture of me in my braces. Have I mentioned it's the full on metal mouth? Not the kind that are clear and much more attractive. I wanted to ugly it up as much as I possibly could.

Oh please even braces can't make you unattractive in any way shape or form....
Hmmm I'm only comment #2.. but I too would like to see a pic of your "grill"!! If I were to say leave 20 more comments would that count as a ridiculous amount of comments?! (I think it should..) But really, I think you will look great either way!!!
So funny you say that Stephanie because I was thinking that is exactly what I would do. LOL!
You are so funny! I have had one of those haircuts and my sister Elizabeth said she wanted to cry for me (: I'll cry for you if you want to but I'm sure I agree with Nate that you still look beautiful--now you just have added sparkle when you smile (:
With or without them you are one hot sexy mama. Let's see them girl- c'mom who do you have to please besides Nate who already thinks you are the bomb. I DARE you to show us.
miss you girl. time for a phone chat.
I just got my braces removed about 6 weeks ago after almost 2 years, so I can totally relate. I'm about 20 years older than you though!
You will be so happy with the results. Congrats on doing this for yourself!
Laurie
i got a traumatizing haircut in middle school too. I asked her to layer around my face...the old hag layered my bangs...thick ugly layered short bangs. not cool then. at. all.
also, i wish i would have done the closed mouth smile...what was i thinking??!!
How many comments would you realllly need to get before you post a picture? I'll come back over and over if need be. ;c) lol
I can repeat comments too if will get a picture up. Seriously. It can't be that bad. Or is it?????
oops.. a little MIA this weekend! But thought I should put another 2 cents in!!
picture pllllleeeeeeeaaaaassssseeeeeeee!!!!
love reading your stuff totally cracks me up. Braces have got to be one of the best investments you could make. Ya the hair cut thing I have one right now, I am now trying to see how much it grows daily sad I know.
You guys make me laugh... :)
You know if you can look that good without smiling then why smile?!!! But I think you might of got braces so you could show off those nice white teeth, so come on let us see. It will be fun, just think one day really soon you can do the before and after pictures! Now that is something to post about. Come on you know your hot, so let us see... who knows maybe all go out and get some just because you look so hot! It's the thing to do right? Really though it seems like everyone is getting them on these days. Jodie my sister just did, and the whole part about talking with a lasps/slurp thing made me laugh, because that was the thing she hates the most. So enough already show us what you got!
I dito everyone who wants to see the 'grill' plus it's a good thing you didn't get the clear ones cuz they usually turn yellow and make you look all dirty and stuff!
You're such a tease. Do the comments you left count? If I don't see a picture soon, I'm coming back to leave more. Well, I was just thinking, I'll be getting the whole brace face thing going probably within the next year. And I'll be honest, no one is going to like this comment, but you probably won't be seeing a picture on my blog of my beautiful grill. However, your closed mouth smile is still HOT!
Just kidding about the last comment, maybe I'll post a picture when I get braces.
Could you post a picture with food in your braces? Just so I could see what I would be getting myself into. Please.
You're right, the whole brace thing is pretty cool these days. There's several colonists who have them now, or will soon be getting them.
You can't be a dentist's wife without the perfect smile right?
GInnie, I can keep going if you want. What do you think?
Wow, I think Chelsea REALLY wants to see your grill. And so do I.
Come on, I see adults with braces every day at work, I KNOW it's not that bad. You'd look hot no matter what.
Not to kick you when your down or anything, but I have one word for you: Invisalign! Of course your braces were significantly cheaper than mine. And I'm impressed, your pictures don't show the usual protruding lips that come with braces. Way to rock the braces thing!
Come on... show us! You will be one of those people who still look gorgeous with braces... I know it! Unlike my scary braces phase in 6th grade. If you post it, I will send you my sixth grade picture! Hows that??? Oh ya, and Im glad your horrible haircut experience wasnt in Philly at some girls apartment... ha ha.
I don't know you but LOVE your humor and your blog. So, here is a plus to you smiling your big bracie-teeth smile for the next 1.5years.......when you get your braces off I'm sure you will look more than 1.5 years younger than you would have had you never gotten them! :-)
BTW...what happened to your super great music???
I will post a picture of mine and Mikes if you post a picture of yours.
Mike color coordinates his bands with the holidays - REALLY cute! I have the clear ones so I can't do such cute things like that.
A promise is a promise! I'll do it if you do it - you first.
i totally miss my braces. every day. you go girl. found you via marta.
